Changing line on reel

Say I want to change the line on my reel from 10 lb to 4 lb ...

Where would I put the 10 lb? It would take forever to try to put it all back on the spool on which it came..

My best guess is to have some cheap reel to keep as a 'spare' for line...

Any other ideas?

Use the spool that once held the line. Alternatively, use a empty can. Just wind the line onto the can. Make sure you label it with lb. test

I tape an old spool onto a drill bit and pull it off with the drill, label and its done.

I do the same thing with the drill only I use a 2X4. Another tip for those of you who use braided line in the fraser. For those who don't know, a full spool of line allows you to cast further. As you loose line your casting distance decreases. Rather than purchasing a full new line i just back my braided with mono.

How old is 'old'? Maybe I want to fish for pinks with 10lb line one week, and lake rainbows with 4lb the next... The 10lb is not really old just because it was used a week, right?

I second the use of a spool on a drill but seeing I work at a tackle shop it doesnt matter. ;D

What about a spare spool?!?  Go to your local tackle shop or local reel repair place and see if you can pick up a spare spool...then you dont need to mess around with switching line.

Biff's idea is good too, I back most of my reels with braid, then you just change the top 100-150 feet.

YOu could join mono to mono with a knot like the blood knot too.  If there is room on the spool to put some 4lb on top of the 10lb....thats another choice.
