I make my own float stops. Easy to do.

Yes Drennans are very nice, but you can loose them just as easy as a $.99 dink float. I use Drennans over spooky coho and steelhead. I've been using my cork "Randog" floats lately, which reminds me I have to donate one to C.G. as I hear he's lost the last one I provided ::) ;D.
Yes I will need one Randy for the Steelhead season. I still dream about the one I lost on my first cast on the Thompson when I was up for jacks in August. :'(

Would this type of float work too? It's very sensitive

It has advantage, since the salmons acquire associative imprinting of nasty things that happened to them or their fellow salmon when the more visible floats are around. ;)

I think it really depends on the individual fish and how much pressure its seen.  I have watched schools of fish split around a float as it drifts overhead.  Drennans make a hug difference here.

Depth of water I would assume makes a difference too; fFish holding in deep water must feel more secure and there for less bothered by stuff floating on the surface.  Slower flows where the fish can evaluated everything (including your float) probably are better suited to drennans.

Fishing is all about presentation (unless yur flossing  ;) ).  I would say stack EVERY little advantage in your favour and your should have much better results!

Drennans are one such advantage.  While not critical in every situation, they make a huge difference in some so why not use that egde to your benefits.  I spend $20 on a tank of gas to get to the vedder, another $7 fora float that may help maximize my chances...might as well.

This comes up here all the time-do a search for Drennan.
The float as shown above is far too small.
As it happens I have an old Balsa float that I just love-got it for pnuts @ a long forgotten closeout-don't use it much as I don't want to lose it. ::)
The one that I prefer is shown below-more or less.
