Some points about safety fishing in rising or raging water and rainy weather:
1. Do not stand too close to the edge of raging water. One slip and you are a goner. I tell all newbie fishing partners to stay at least one body length from the edge. You get a 10.5 ft rod, and you don't need to stand at the edge to fish the edge anyway.
2. Do not wade if the water is rising. When you are fishing, always use a point of referrence, like a rock, to measure the water level to see if it is rising fast. Side channels are dangerous as they look innocent but can be too fast & deep to cross or wade back.
3. Do not stand on slopy or slippery rock. One wrong step, you can be history if you drop into raging current.
4. Look at the back of you to make sure the bank is stable, and that there is no over-hanging trees behind ready to cave in. Avoid the areas known for unstable banks & clay slides.
5. Even if the section of river you are fishing is not raining, you need to check if the head water mountain areas are in heavy rain. The river may still rise if the water shed area is blanketed by rain clouds. So be alert.
6. Make sure you have your suspender strapped properly if fishing in chest wader.
