First Coho!! (Stave River Oct' 17th.)
« on: October 17, 2005, 09:25:59 PM »

Raining cat and dog the whole day, and knowing i might have a better chance to catch a fish in rain, i decided to head to Stave River for a shoot at the Chums.   Bought a new Shimano FX 8'ft rod and new Abu Garcia ambassadeur 6000C baitcaster reel(i loaded it up with 12lbs line) and Arrive just below the Ruskin Dam at around 1pm, pretty late start. First time at this place, full of hope when i got the the shore side i wanted to start fishing at. However, i couldn't seem to be able to cast with my new gear, the Abu just seemed a bit complicated to me. my first cast had the spoon casted just 5 fts to the water and the reel was still turning, i stopped it right away but the line was all messed up. :(
Didn't want to waste my time so i decided to just get back to my car and bring out my regular gear (7'ft Daiwa graphite composite and Shimano FX2000 reel). Trout fishing set-up!  tied with a spoon, i made my first cast straight toward the strong current.... bam, fish on! the fight didn't seem that strong and the drag wasn't too overwhelming, i landed it 5 mins later, a huge boot chum!  there it went, back to the water.  lots of hookups the whole afternoon, couldn't land most of them.  i was under-equipped once again, and the numerous hookups usually ended in line-snap and spoon loss.  there was one fish, didn't fight much until i reeled it back near the shore, it all in a sudden made a strong final run downstream, the line was dragging all the way out and when i found it, the spool was almost empty! just when i adjusted the drag the line snapped!  At the end of the day, i lost 6 spoons and two jig heads!! expensive venture..
At around 3pm, i retrieved my spoon as i have been doing the whole afternoon, there was a strong tap at the other end of the line, wasted no time, i set the hook right away, fish on! it was close to the shore, the fight the fish put up was impressive, i was thinking: oh well, just another chum... and when it made an incredible jump out of the water, it was a clean chrome fish!  a chum? a spring jack? no, it's Coho!  I was all excited when i found out the fish i just hooked up was a Coho, patiently i fought the fish with my rod held horizontally, let it dragged when it wanted to, and gain some line when it wasn't pulling hard. Just when i started worrying that i might lose this nice fish again, the Coho decided to beach itself!!!  :-*   "It's a Hatchery too!! " i screamed as i found the adipose fin was missing :)  this one is into my record book.... sweet, this trip was well worth it.
Landed a few more chums later but i released them all, as they looked just not appealing at all.  :P  left at around 5pm and took me an hour drive back to vancouver.  she was a nice bronze back doe, the flesh was bright red too!  I keep the roe in the freezer along with the pink's roe i obtained two weeks ago, and if any of u wants it, let me know...
great experience.. awesome memory.. what a milestone!  I would be back!  :)

I'll take the roe. If you head out to the stave again drop it off at riverside fly and tackle. Right on shaughnessy and Lougheed. should be right on the way. Write my name on it too (Dion) or the boss will take it. If you fly fish i will ty you some flies.
