Squamish River October 23rd
« on: October 23, 2005, 08:08:21 PM »

Since DennisK and a few others were asking about the Squamish, I thought the staff of FWR had an obligation to obtain the most accurate report, by doing a field trip ourselves. ;)

Good news and bad news.

The good news, plenty of fresh chum, which were very silver, moving through the Lower Squamish River (downstream of the confluence of Mamquam River).

The bad news, visibility of the Squamish River is POOR. Lower Squamish River had about 8 inches of visibility. Cheakamus was not much better, around 12 inches. Mamquam was a bit better, around 1 to 2 feet. Under such condition, I have to say unfortunately most fish that I saw were flossed. My float didn't dip once. I did hook one fish accidentally while looking away. itosh asked where my float was, I gently lifted up the rod and the line began to peel off the reel. It was obviously snagged. I ended up donating another Drennan to the river, or another angler, because of that fish.

The chum salmon that were saw, were on the move. They had no interest in whatever was being placed in front of them most of the time.

Hopefully condition will improve.

So, why are the eyes of this chum salmon so bulged out?

Most responsable of you, and I'm sure your hard work will be most appreciated  ;)  ;)

Actually I've see that before.  On the Frazer I saw a big spring jump out of the water and do a header into the rocks.  It's eyes looked just like that, but then again it wasn't swimming around afterwards, that's for sure!

I've bonked a fish with a big rock (the size of the rock was an overkill but it was the smallest I could find at the time) and the result was bulgy eyes  :-\

This also happened when I pulled a rockcod up from the bottom too fast, they eyes nearly popped out  :o
A bright orange fish with bulgy eyes, looked like some kid's bathtub toy  ;D

A knife to the brain is quick, painless and a lot less messy.  Just a hint!

Just a note of correction.  The Mamquam is crystal clear.  The Squamish is dirtier than Sat.

But!!!! I'm not sure if I should say this....... Sorry Rod! but the fishing was awesome!  The Manquam area sucks.  The Squamish is a big river and there are many spots to drop a line.

I brought my relatives down  for a day of fun and lots of exercise...they were not dissapointed!  Like everyone else here , I cann't give away the "SECRET SPOT"  but , holy crap did we have a workout!!

CHROME, CHROME, CHROME!!!

PS  Thanks to all for the tips and hints.

The Mamquam does indeed suck and proves what I've always said-People are Sheep (sheeple) and can't think for themselves.
Miles and miles of river to fish and they all line up @ the same pools a few dozen feet from the nearest road and practically on top of each other just like that stinking sh*thole the CV.
Also-if the water is dirty use a larger/flashier presentation and you won't be flossing.

Rod, do you feel it is an advantage using a drennan?

Not on that day, but I'm rich, so...

That was all I had with me. We did not plan to fish for chum salmon.
