agreed BS....I migrated form Winterpeg 1 3/4 yrs ago....my last winter there was -56 no wind.......brrrr..but u get aclimatized......now I thrive in sunny Osoyoos..
and true enuff...the best fishin' is when most folks pack it in.....hardy kin b good....))

Buck I did not say specifically steelhead as you may know they are a more protected fish species.

      All steelhead form the Chilliwack Hatchery are adipose fin clipped prior to release. Fish are removed from Cap trough's, clipped and then put into the rearing channels for the remainder of the their time at the hatchery. On a very small percentage of fish the adipose fin may regenerate if it was a poor clip.

Well, I have a bit of an advantage over most!!!!   I spent 21 years in Winnipeg, where it was winter about 81/2 months out of the year!!   So the weather out here in Dec/Jan/feb doesn't scare me off that easy.  Do I still get cold, yes, do I care that I get cold and have to run to the truck to warm up a bit sometimes, not at all.  I can't wait to again be one of the diehards that go out in the worst weather possible.

I spent 4 years in Winterpeg. And 1 year in Churchill. Damn cold. -10 at night in early Sept.

Same thing here. When I come down from Edmonton for a week of steelie fishing in Feb its like springtime for me

No, when was the last time you fished in a ditch?  Correction: it's not all about catching the fish.

People say that all the time, but it is all about the fish.  Trying to catch the fish.  The anticipation of catching a fish.  Seeing fish.  Touching fish.  Thinking, dreaming, and talking about fish.  It's about the fish.  That why we don't go hiking, or camping, we go on fishing trips! 

I dint know about you like being out in the great outdoors specially next to a river there is just something magical about it but to me catching or even getting a fish on is just as important as anything. Sure you can talk about the fish see the fish but when you go around the whole day and get not a bite that experience is ruined for me. Like you said its about touching the fish, i agree there is nothing like getting your hands on a fish you have a whole new appreciation for it but how can you get there without catching it first? Talk is good but nothing compares to actually fighting the fish.

Floater, you're right when you say that anticipation of catching and actually touching a fish is what drives us and that is a very important part of it.  But others are also right when they say getting out there and experiencing it is just as important. It's natural to go days or weeks, and for some, years without catching a steelhead.  It's that dogged determination that distinguishes the steelheader from other fishermen. We just slog on. What I love the most is the comaraderie and lifelong friendships that have been forged over the years as it's really special to spend time on the river with guys that share the same passion as you.

Yep tottaly agree, i just like to have it all.

Mojo, my favorite time is Jan/Feb. If you know about 2 week prior to arriving that would be the best. Having a new kid means giving my wife more notice. I would say middle of Jan- end of Feb is optimal.

   I have to confees I too am an adict to steelheading for all the reasons previously mentioned and one more that has not been mentioned and that is the type of angler that is out on the water. Steelheaders are different in that they are fishing for the allure of catching a steelhead and not so much with the hopes of taking a piece of silver home (not that there is anything wrong with taking meat home). However, I would venture to say that most really only want to see the float go down, feel the battle, pose for the camera and watch a thing of beauty swim away to procreate and admire everything about the entire experience, not just its taste. It is definately a different feeling on the river when surrounded by anglers that share similar interests when it comes to the sport and one that I truly look forward to. Tight lines, to all this steelheading season and lets hope their ocean survival (and nets) is good, because we definately are missing a few coho. I will have a report for you concerning the Chehalis later on this evening as bug pumper and I were out Sunday, tight lines to all.

Well with that I think that it may be time for some Steely Porn!!!!!   Who wants to be the first to show off there best steelhead catch, or even perhaps there best steely story?

I caught my first steelhead on my first trip, I then thought, "well this isn't that hard at all".  God was I wrong, I went over a year and about 35 trips without hooking another one.   At that point I was pretty much possessed with catching another.  The weather did not matter, I went out ANYTIME I could.  Then finally, one afternoon in late feb, 2003 I hooked into this one.                                                             
As you can tell by the look on my face I was rather pumped about it.  It was such a great feeling to get that monkey off my back.

Yeah sounds like me, It took me about 20+ trips after school. Just as it was getting dark BAM fish on. So much adenaline going through me as soon as I knew I had something big on, and the only thing going through my head the whole time was im gonna lose it, im gonna lose it, im gonna lose it. But thankfully it was meant to be and I landed the 13-15 lb wild buck, although I landed the beast the fact that I couldnt get a picture with my prize kept me a bit disappointed. But everyone of those 50+ hours I spent just watching my float was worth it, and everytime I think back to that day I get a chill down my spine. I cant wait to put in my next 50+ hours for another, which is only just a few more months away. .
