It's been a while since my last guided sturgeon trip. I have forgotten the set up the guide used.
I have a chance to go with another new-be sturgeon fisher this coming week end. He's got a boat!
What set up would you guys recommend?

What do you have?

I have a Trophy XL Sturgeon Rod, a Penn 330GTI, I use 50lb mono and 60lb test. I use an 8/0 Gammy about 24'' leader. On the main line I run a swivel clip that runs freely for the wedge weight and than tie a bar swivel on to attach my leader to.

I use chum roe right now that I put in a ladies stocking, tie it off and attach it to the hook. Thats it. Now you have me wanting to go out

It would help to have a sturdy pole, and a fairly beefy reel.  Other than that, just like Eddie said it!!!!  Now I want to go to.  How is your buddy and his boat doing Eddie!!!!!

I dont needa boat. I went out on saturday after being skunked for coho. Went to a local place and caught 2 sturgies off shore in an hour. 3 footer and a 4 footer. Anytime you want to come along let me know. Going with a buddy for coho next weekend and its going to be my last weekend for salmon this year, so after that anytime for the sturgies.

i use 100lb braid and 72lb braid leader. about 12inches of leader. barrel swivel then bout 12 salmon beads, and a snap swivel that runs free on the line. attach a weight to that and hten for bait use chum roe (uncured) bag it adn put it on the bend of the hook and turn it to the inside just to cover the point (very important, increases hook ups big time) then spider thread in place.

The Trophy XL one piece is great for fishing from a boat or up the canyon where a big cast is not required. If your fishing down around Mission where you have too throw halfway across the river a heavy action bar rod will save you some weights and bait. Also if you intend to buy a Trophy XL check it over well. I returned two due too torn cork and missing ferrule liner.

Hey guys, thanks a lot for your tips. It's very helpful.
I've also found a sketch of a sturgeon set-up and would post here if Rod would help. For me it helps if I can visualize the set-up and it might help others as well.

yes was gonna say that too. but also you never need that much leader. like i said i use 12 inches. less likely to get tangled. limp leader is key aswell.

I agree that you dont need that much leader no more than 2 feet.

Yap since sturgies are bottom feeders. You don't want bait to be far off river bed.

i doubt even with a 4foot leader your bait would be off the bottom. with a 7/0-8/0 hook and a huge gob of roe it will be heavy enough to keep it there.
