Was getting ready to go out and get my bucket of Herring when I discovered that the sale is off for this year.  So....go back to sleep or head out fishing...

  Any reason why it was called off this year?  While crab fishing yesterday I did a bit of jigging for herring, caught around 20 of them but they were all very small, the size of anchovies.  Never seen so many small ones, this time last year we caught a number of herring that were 8 to 10 inches. All the fish we caught yesterday were around 4 to 5 inches.

Use herrings you buy from your local tackle shop. There's a good area just outside of Fisherman's Cove

"VANCOUVER/CKNW(AM980) - The 54th Annual CKNW Orphans Fund Herring Sale set for Sunday has been cancelled.
It was supposed to go ahead last Sunday, but it had to be postponed after a net broke, and anxious customers were left to wait another week.

Now, due to a lack of fish, it has been cancelled outright.

The cancellation is only the second in the entire history of the sale.

The funds raised support the CKNW Orphans Fund.

Again, this year's herring sale has been cancelled until next year.

Nothing wrong with eating herring. I eat pickled herring all the time, especially around christmas

Herrings have one of the highest omega 3 fats along with salmon, mackeral and sardines. Omega 3 fats are good for the heart.

 For jigging herring you need a "herring jig", its a peice of fishing line with 5 or so small hooks on it spread out every 10 inches or so, they look like little flys, the ones I buy from Bobs sporting goods are made from shark skin I believe.  They cost around 5 dollars. There is a swivel at one end to attach a sinker, usaully I fish just off bottom, drop it down and slowly raise and lower the rod.

Scientists have found out that perch contains higher Omega 3 than salmon. Some companies in states have began research on possible 'farming' of perch.

OBD, herring abundance, both pacific and atlantic, have been shown to exhibit cyclic fluctuations in past studies. One year of low abundance is not an indication of poor stocks in future years. Such fluctuation is temperature, climatic, influenced. Data collected from Japan, California in the past few decades all show similar trends. I have the studies stacked away somewhere in the folders, I'll have to look them up later on when I get over this flu that I am having such a hard time to get rid of.

And of course, this fluctuation of abundance would have a key effect on salmon abundance.

When I get back in January, we should try jigging for herring. Bwi Bwi, you were getting them last January right?

Excellent eating fish in my opinion. Asians love to eat them salted and grilled, Europeans love to eat them pickled in various flavours.

I've never tried them smoked, would be interested to try that out too.

I have never tried jigging for herring, what kind of gear would I have to use?  I would guess that smallest gear I have, like my Trout pole I would guess.  I also wouldn't mind going out for perch and whatever else I could get.  Where might I go for these, perhaps a peir at the Lonsdale Quay? Or find a dock off Ambleside? Also wondering on bait!!  I was thinking little cooked shrimp, or pieces of cooked chicken!!  Would these work?   Thanks in advance!!
