Furry Creek, August 10th 2009
« on: August 10, 2009, 03:33:50 PM »

Was out today and it appears that the larger schools that were around have moved on with the rains. There were some fish around but not many hookups today. :-\

I heard that one fisherman was struck by a seal while trying to land a fish and ended up breaking his rod.

I was there today and the tide was on the way in when i got there around 5.30am
nothing doing much until later on in the morning
i think a lot of the fish have moved as it was a lot slower that Saturday
water clarity is around 2ft
There were a few guys chucking gear and were getting snagged up almost every cast
you think they would get it after a couple of casts (its too shallow for that heavy buzz bomb)
Quote
Basic skill: use a tube float and a pink wet fly on a 4-5 foot leader

this is a good bet for gear fishermen, you can also use a light spoon instead of a fly with the float
seal was a pain in the but today they got a few fish that were hooked

I was fishing beside him
not sure if it hit him but it charged around our legs chasing the fish and as the guy tryed to lift the fish up with one hand it took off again and snapped his rod
he quickley grabbed the broken half and the fish was in the seals mouth still on his line, next the fish and seal were gone
great to see but sad for the guy to snap his rod
As dereke stated it was slow
nice to meet you out there dereke

Wow that sure is scary when seals start getting like that. be prepared for them to be just as fierce in the Squamish river. I have had them run behind me onto shore going for fish, between my legs (had me dancing) and had them several times right next to me or infront of me. It really scares the S*** out of you the first few times because they are not small at all. If you see a wave of fish come close in by your feet you better watch out cause you dont wanna get bit by accident or hit and possibly get a busted leg  :o

be careful out there with those seals. I rather lose flies by "allowing" the seal to intercept my fish once in awhile instead of the possible alternative.

I'd just lost a fish after trying to horse it into the shallows away from the seal and was wading back out when the episode with the brazen seal occurred.  Sure looked to me like the seal bumped him pretty good as the fish was seemingly trying to run between the angler's legs.  He then tried to lift the fish up with the line nearly parallel with the rod and the rod popped right in the middle.

I wonder if you'd stand a better chance with the seal by loosening off the drag completely and letting the fish run free for a bit.

The seals in the Squamish R are pretty bold too and show up in the dozens below the Mamquam.

 8) sounds like good entertainment with the seals these days but a real pain in the butt for the fisherman. ahhh mother nature at her finest.
