Chilliwack River, October 12th, 2010
« on: October 12, 2010, 07:10:57 PM »

After yesterday's skunking and the confrontation with a long liner it was back to my old haunts this morning. Only one other person around as the long weekend crowds have now gone, in some area's anyway.

It was not long until the bites started and I lose a couple and then land a wild coho jack. Boy do I want an adult as I donot want to not get one this season. On one of the subtle takes (one never knows if it is a smolt or not as there seems to be a lot this year that will disappear when the water cools a bit more) the Maple Leaf Drennan dips and the water boils on the strike as a bright coho becomes airborne not once but several times, the heart and pulse quickens as this fish looks in the 7 to 8 pound range, I see it is a buck by its snot.

I fight it carefully for 4 or 5 minutes and just as I think I have him, slack line, gone. disappointed but at least I know for sure i did have an adult coho on. i thought a time or two earlier in the season I may have but not certain. Well now I am getting closer to one. I loose a couple more jacks and then land a chum that goes back. Then believe it or not another coho that is a lot smaller but it comes nicely in and I see it is a wild doe so it goes back to join the buck that escaped me but I finally did break the month long dry spell.

My day ends with a bright doe chum that goes home with me after taking a roe bag. I have smoked one last week and it was enjoyable, all is eaten and I have another smoking now.

I am thankful for my fishing trip with lots of action and a coho finally landed and a chum to eat too.

I cleanup some garbage in thanks and find three DNE's and a cleardrift as well. As I pack up I see a top rod from this forum land a chinook adult and a bright chinook jack, both released, both inside a few minutes.

Off to badminton now and I look forward to tomorrow as I belive my luck is now changing.

Sounds like a good day all in all Chris. Me the total opposite, made my start below the train bridge and worked my way down. the only fish I witness caught are two coho from a dug out pool caught by an older gentleman casting spinners first thing in the morning (when I came back a few hours later he reported the bite had died off after his second catch, more likely the pool was spooked when a few other anglers began attacking it from all sides). Spent some of the morning trying to get used to casting my new steelheader reel, definately not the same as my silex...need some more practice casts. Made my way down to the top of the canal near the heron reserve...at least I think I was near there. No bites, did see some dead chinook and chum sitting at the bottom of some shallow side channels. Made my way up river and missed two good strikes...frustrated. Another hit and hook up that lasts maybe 10 seconds before the hook pops out, not sure what it was but felt bigger than a jack. Saw a group of younger guys under the train bridge catching a few fish...couldnt tell what from afar...saw one of them boot his catch into the river after dragging it on the rocks. As I hiked past I saw the three of them fishing with massive pencil lead and 10 foot leaders...joy. :-\
Was hiking along a trail looking down in the water and could spot some nice sized coho from what I could tell along the deep bank...nice calm water and I was on the right side of the river. cast two drifts no takers. one more cast and crap its snagged...I walk with my rod pointed straight and tug, I dont reef on it like I'm trying to set the hook or anything, one more tug and snap my hook and every flys at me. At first I'm happy I dont need to re-tie anything but then I realize oh wait the tip of my rod snapped....how it snapped fromt hat I dont know. I was hardly yanking at it, just pulling it back with me, positive the line didnt wrap around the tip. That ended my day and a slew of cursing as I walked back to my car. So now I need to figure out if I can warranty my rod or if I need to buy something new...whcih I do not have the money for at this time. On the other hand my baitcaster and convergence is sitting in the closet....guess I'll have to respool it for the river. Still has braid on it from the fraser.

That's unfortunate vancook...definitely dampens the mood.  I'd definitely try to get a replacement rod if it was a new one.  I had a bit better day on the river.  Fished mid river.  Lot more people around me than I thought there would be for a Tuesday morning.  Landed 4, 3 adult chinooks, and 1 chum.  Kept 1 chinook.  It seems all of the chum I've landed have been coloured up.  And other than 1 wild coho last week, no other cohos for me.  I just use a regular styrofoam float which I cut to make smaller, so it's more sensitive.  Are the other floats that some guys mention better at sensing a bite?  Are they worth it?  Just wondering.

Wow, that blows. Did you straight line it and walk backwards when you broke off?

Chris I'll see you in the morning again, not a snagger in sight! Cook you're gonna have to pick up a new rod even if it is warrantied (takes several weeks). Pick up a convergence mooching rod, that's what I am using right now and picked it up for $50 in the states. Not a terrible rod as a back up

I can see the Maple Leaf Drennan going down a few times tomorrow.  ;D I did not get back out this evening as got tied up with Fraser River cleanup stuff and Alexandra Morton's paddle down the Fraser. Before I knew it darkness set in but I had some good badminton games instead. Should make me sharp for tomorrow fishing trip. ;D Conditions should be excellent.

Too bad we can't say the same about the Leafs  ;D

Well done on the coho. I have yet to get myself one. I guess I have to wet a line first before that will happen.  ;)
