Back To Reality On The Vedder January, 12
« on: January 12, 2005, 09:27:51 PM »

I think I should blame Nice Fish for my day today except he just posted under my post from this morning so I can not use him as an excuse. ;D

After yesterday's excitement even though I did not land any of the 5 I hooked it was so good to see 4 of them, O so beautiful a fish and I could hardly sleep last night looking forward to this morning's adventure as I felt so confident.

I was a bit concerned with the warm front that blew in from the West last night that brought the freezing level way up on the local mountains. I checked the river level this morning and no jump shown on the Slesse gauge.

The West wind first drove me to the field for a quick duck hunt and my average this morning was as bad a my hooked - landed record of 3 for 10 that I miscalculated this morning, .300 not .333.

Was able to get 2 ducks for 10 shells. Ducks picked and then quickly to the Vedder but darn 4 guys in the hot spot, not yesterday's though. ;D ;D River perfect. ;D

While turning the car around talked to Toothpick T. on the other side of the river, good to see him on the flow as he has been in the sick bay for a while.

He informs one wild already this morning and it is shortly after 8. I tell him of my misfortune from yesterday and he nods in aggreement, a good day in one sense I guess one could say.

I head in the direction of Fulcrum Country, boy I like that name, should actually fish there one day and when I am asked "where were you fishing", I could say "IN FULCRUM COUNTRY" and then see the expression on their face, what river is that they might say. ;D

I quickly park and gear up and head to the real hot spot, I find an angler is working the first run I reach and I ask him anything doing, "one on the first cast" he say and then with a grin on his face adds a coho. ;D

I leave him in the run and head up river and run into Keith who's wife I play badminton with. He tells me two fish were caught before I arrived. The two luckly guys took pictures and the fish were released Keith tells me.
We talk a bit about the fishing season etc. and I then head to where I hit all the fish yesterday, I see fresh footprints. :( Either they caught them alll or their was none there as the Balsa float would not go down. ::)

I see the Maple Leafs just won their game 3-2 over Edmonton in AHL as they keep rolling, rolling, rolling right along with 4 wins in a row. ;D ;D

The river then started to colour up but remained fishable as I do some exploring but that was all I did except for 30 cents in tins plus 10 cents that I found in the snow, no float down, so off to badminton.
After badminton back to the river for the last hour and for the second time in a row in the last 3 days that I get to this particular spot a fellow is cleaning up a fish. ::) The river is again perfect as it had cleaned up from the time I had left for badminton. The wind is blowing from the South it seems and will be coming from the East I imagine in the morning as another Artic front is coming from the Interior, more cold fishing ahead it seems. Met the same fellow I met in the morning, that caught the coho said he got one later up Tamihi way and saw a few other caught in his travels. I fish the run thinking a steelhead may move in as they are moving at all times of the day, a number of them have been seen moving through the riffles in the canal this week.

As the crimson suns sets in the Western horizon to signal the end of another day and darkness starts to creep in I notice out of the corner of my eye a float coming down, for a minute I think a fisherman has slipped in above me but no it is a Drennan. ;D

I quickly forget about fishing and charge after it and after a dozen or so steps I step on my bait rag and almost pitch head long into the I am sure chilly waters. I must have looked like a fish out of water splashing through the shallows but it is a prized Drennan after all. ;D Glad no one was around to see the performance.

As I pick up the pace to cut off the fast moving float at the OK Corral my badminton shorts that I had left on after badminton (a rush to get fishing no time to change) under my waders of course come undone somehow and they slowly begin to drop down around my knees so as to preventv from falling I now begin to waddle like a duck. I have one chance at the Drennan, I lunge, I grab, and the prize is in my left hand, success. ;D As I examine it I notice a slight crack which hopefully I can repair with some silicone. I better be able to after this workout that was almost as good as a badminton game. I again check to make sure no one saw this new Reality Show of some sorts. I call it a day after this and head home before I get into more trouble.

As I said yesterday there is always a new adventure just around the corner but this was one I did not bank on. Maybe I should put this Drennan on tomorrow and it will bring my first hatchery to the beach and I will not be wearing the badminton shorts thats for sure. ;D ;D

Sounds like another fantastic day for you, Chris. Nice day, no wind, not working (like I had to) and a Drennan to boot! It's a winner!
My turn tomorrow. :D
Cheers.

A fine, fine story Chris and it is certainly a joy to lean back, relax and devour one of your T-bone steak tales. In fact its very nice to see and hear from all the usual gang now that FWR's back online. I am hoping to be able to head out and try my luck on the weekend and after reading Chris's report it really gets me fired up and excited. Thanks Chris. :)
