Bull Trout on the Vedder?
« on: April 18, 2007, 04:18:13 PM »

The, Squamish River can be excellent for bull trout, and rainbow trout fishing this time of the year. My question is does the Vedder River have a run of bull trout, as well?

I dont think the vedder would be a good place to go for bull trout. Iv never heard or seen one caught. But I do know there are some nice small rainbows around. I was luck enough to hook into 2 small trout on my 2/0 hook on the Vedder this year, one time I saw my float dip down a couple times I set the hook thinking it was a Steelhead! As I set the hook the poor little fish flys over my head and into the bushs behind me, I had to do a little rescue and get him back to the water.  ;)

Over the years I have seen some very impressive specimens caught from the Vedder. During the fall salmon runs, resident Dollies will drop down out of the lake to feed on loose eggs and flesh. These fish tend to hang around into December then return upstream. Starting in December and lasting into February there is a run of sea-run Dollies. These fish are much different than their resident cousins. They are short, fat and very chrome. In January, 99 I landed a Dolly that was close to 12lbs, and that same year I heard of numerous fish over 8lbs. They are there, but not in numbers that you can target them successfully.
As far as rainbows go there are a few in the 1-5lb class that drop down river to feed on salmon eggs and flesh. But like the Dollies, there just aren't enough to target them.
