Vedder River Report March 24th 2012
« on: March 24, 2012, 07:45:33 PM »

Was out today and the water was perfect but the wind was just relentless.

It was difficult to cast but I did see 11 fish hooked. 2 hatcheries kept.

There was a lot of activity on the lower river this am, I saw 7 fish hooked including one that I lost. Only saw 1 landed it was a small wild fish. Beauty day despite the wind.

I Was out yesterday and saw it was busy on the lower so I headed to mid river. It was a ghost town there, only saw a couple people and only one of them said they caught or saw anything. I then headed to the canal about lunch time and it was a ghost town there too. Not a bite all day long. I Was really surprised cause the water looked great and I thought it would be shoulder to shoulder out there with the nice weather.

Not surprising.Happens every year when spring and the warmer weather rolls around.People are on to other things after pounding the river all winter long.

This weekend me and my dad camped at thurston. On Friday i got out for an hour before dark and fished the prison but got nothin. Saturday got up early and went to my favourite pool and first cast with a pink worm results in a chrome 8 lb wild buck. Couple casts later i hook another but quickly lost it. Hooked 2 more in this pool but lost em both. Headed farther up river and was surprised to see no one out, at my other fav run i got a nice little 5 lb wild doe.

Sunday, what a day out there! Went to my favourite pool again at about 9 and landed a big 14 lb hatch doe right away on a pink worm but released it as it was only 5 mins into my day. few mins later i got another doe but smaller. Hooked another but quickly lost it. Switched to a jig and BAM first cast a big very coloured buck comes to hand. After a bit i switch to a blue and pink jig and hook up with a HUGE buck at about the 20 lb mark, after 10 mins i was about to tail it when it took off up river and snapped me off. Couple more hits for me and my dad lost one then the action stopped so we headed up farther to where i got one the previous day. I pulled 2 does both about 7 lbs from this run and my dad lost another. Altogether i landed 5 sunday and 2 saturday, all on small pink worms and jigs. Waters low and clear, perfect is the way to describe it. It was so nice steelheadin while gettin a tan.
