April 5th, 2005: World Rivers Day Initiative
From United Nations Water for Life, Canada:
Greetings River Advocates,
The United Nations is launching the "Water for Life Decade"
this year, to bring a higher profile to global water issues. As
part of this, river enthusiasts from around the world are coming
together to participate in the inaugural "World Rivers Day"
on September 25th, 2005.
In future, this event will take place annually on the last Sunday
in September and is intended to be a celebration of the world's
waterways. This will be patterned after the highly successful BC
Rivers Day in western Canada, which is already one of the biggest
events of its kind in the world, attracting up to 75,000 people
annually.
World Rivers Day will highlight the many values of our waterways.
It will also strive to increase public awareness and hopefully encourage
the improved stewardship of rivers around the world. Rivers in every
country face an array of threats and the better caring of our rivers
and streams is an essential component of any effort to be better
water stewards.
World Rivers Day Events
There are lots of ways that groups and communities can get involved
in Rivers Day. Consider planning a local event which can range from
stream cleanups and fish enhancement projects to educational outings
and community riverside celebrations.
