July 20th, 2005: Adipose Clipped Cultus
Lake Sockeye Salmon
Cultus Lake Salmon Research Laboratory has released a educational
poster that all Vedder River anglers should be aware of. Cultus
Lake sockeye salmon are endangered and some of the returning fish
are adipose clipped. Adipose fin is a small fin just behind the
dorsal fin of all salmonid species. Hatchery produced coho and sockeye
salmon from the Vedder River have their adipose fin clipped for
marking reasons. Anglers are allowed to keep hatchery coho salmon
that are missing an adipose fin, but all sockeye salmon are to be
released (including those that are missing an adipose fin). Please
study the poster and learn the differences between a coho and a
sockeye salmon.
