Spring Break Ideas
Posted on March 10th, 2006 by Rodney Hsu, webmaster
Spring break begins this weekend for students who attend elementary and secondary schools in BC. Figuring out activities to fulfill this period always seems impossible for both parents and children. I have come up with several inexpensive yet exciting suggestions that could make this year's break an eventful one in the Lower Mainland.
- Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery and Visitors Centre
The Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery does not just raise trout for anglers to catch, but it also operates a visitors centre that can provide a fun and educational experience for all ages. Live fish species that are currently on display in the stream exhibit include white sturgeon, carp, sculpin, cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, whitefish, steelhead, crayfish, bull trout and dolly varden. Self-guided tours and activities are available, admission is by donation. Guided tours are also available by advanced booking. The Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery is located in Abbotsford (34345 Vye Road). Contact Natalie West at 604-504-4716 or Natalie.West@gofishbc.com.
- Finding Rainbows
Lakes across the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley are scheduled to be stocked with rainbow trout next week. There are numerous urban lakes that provide convenient access and non-stop fishing action. Lakes that you may want to explore include Alice Lake, Rice Lake, Sasamat Lake, Buntzen Lake, Lafarge Lake, Como Lake, and Mill Lake. Stocked rainbow trout are between 10 and 14 inches in length. They are easy to catch and perfectly edible. Read more on trout fishing in the Lower Mainland!
- Estuary Critters
Benthic critters such as sculpins and flounders
do not take holidays. They patiently sit on the bottom of the estuary Fraser River and Burrard Inlet, waiting for the next meal to swim by. Pier fishing is relaxing, social and safe. Dress warmly as the wind has no mercy this time of the year. To catch these critters, be sure to fish during the incoming tides. Use sufficient amount of weight and allow your bait to sit on the bottom. Rest the rod on the ground and watch. When the rod tip begins to dangle, be ready!
- Ride and Explore
Located roughly 15km north of the entrance of Seymour Conservative Reserve, the Seymour Salmon Hatchery is a fantastic destination for the entire family. Access to the hatchery is not possible by car, but there is a beautiful bike path that leads to it. The hatchery has rearing ponds that hold juvenile steelhead, salmon and cutthroat trout that are to be released in the summer. Explore the temperate forest and life history of the pacific salmon on two wheels.
