Job Opportunity at Georgia Strait Alliance
Posted on June 1st, 2006 by Rodney Hsu, Webmaster

Job Title
Salmon Aquaculture Campaigner

Georgia Strait Alliance seeks a suitable candidate for our salmon aquaculture campaign. Location is negotiable, with preference being the Campbell River/Comox Valley area.

The successful candidate will be part of Georgia Strait Alliance's aquaculture campaign team within the Coastal Alliance for Aquaculture Reform, working collaboratively to prevent the further expansion of open netcage fish farms and to ensure transition of the salmon farming industry to closed containment. He/she will need to work closely with local First Nations, liaise with government officials and local media, track developments at fish farms in the northern Strait of Georgia / lower Johnstone Strait area, develop submissions to government regarding new fish farm applications, carry out public education and liaise with local communities and key stakeholders on a regular basis.

Candidates should have:

  • excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills, including public speaking
  • experience in communicating with government agencies, elected officials and the media
  • excellent time management skills and accountability
  • ability to work well both independently and in a team
  • ability to travel for meetings within the region
  • good computer literacy and strong research skills
  • commitment to the Georgia Strait Alliance's mission and values

Other useful assets would be experience in working with First Nations, grassroots organizing and strategic planning; an understanding of wild salmon and its habitat and of the environmental and social impacts of salmon aquaculture; and occasional access to a boat.

This is a full-time position. The position will begin as soon as possible, and is initially for a six-month term with renewal subject to evaluation. Workplace is negotiable, with home basing an option.

Please email letter, resume and list of references (MS Word attachments preferred) by June 15, 2006 to:
