Family Fishing Event a success at Cultus Lake
Posted on June 20th, 2006 by Chris Gadsden

The annual pikeminnow derby organized by the Fraser Valley Salmon Society under the chairmanship of Peter MacPherson and held at Cultus Lake on Saturday saw a total of 251 anglers taking part. 133 children and 118 adults spent the day trying to land the largest northern pikeminnow. Entries were up from last year’s derby when 182 avid anglers landed 482 pikeminnows.

The derby was part of the Family Fishing Society of BC’s free fishing weekend and one of several fishing related events held throughout the Province.

At the close of the derby, junior Myles Joinson captured the largest fish of the derby, a pikeminnow weighing 1.9 pounds. With this fish Joinson took home the junior championship.

Perpetual derby winner Keith Hollsworth took home the adult division crown with a 1.62 pound fish.

The largest pikeminnow caught by a junior fishing from the dock was a 1.21 pounder landed by Michaila Mclay.

The total combined weight of pikeminnows landed by a junior was entered by Cole Rogozinski, a total weight of 8.38 pounds.

Brent Wilker took the top spot in the combined weight in the adult division with a total weight of 12.84 pounds of pike minnows.

Dave Barnes, a Fisheries and Oceans Canada research technician from the Cultus lab said the final count of pike minnows were not in yet but he estimated it to be in the 6 to 7 hundred range.

Barnes said “FOC wishes to thank the Fraser Valley Salmon Society for their continuing support for the removal of these predators from Cultus Lake. Along with this derby, our trap nets and purse seiners we have removed over 12,000 northern pikeminnows so far this year. As well the biological data we have been able to collect is very useful. 2,000 pikeminnows were tagged in 2004 and some were captured in this derby so we are able to determine growth rates of pikeminnows” Barnes added.

Macpherson said “the derby went very well again this year thanks to the support of so many people and organizations that donate prizes and others that volunteered their time to the derby.”

Once again, Dean Werk, owner of Great River Fishing Adventure provided, along with several of his guides a number of boats to take several families out on their boats for some fishing.
