Mystery Fish Contest #11

Answer: Coastal Cutthroat Trout

Mystery BC fish species.

The mystery fish species in our eleventh mystery fish species contest is a coastal cutthroat trout, or Oncorhynchus clarki clarki.

Coastal cutthroat trout's main characteristics include the orange slash on the bottom of each gill plate. Their body is typically very spotted. Newly arrived fish from the saltwater tend to be silver with less visible spots. Fish that have been in a stream for a period of time such as the one in this photograph, have a light blue/green body, pinkish gill plates and orange/yellow lower fins.

Out of 272 entries, there were 225 correct answers (82.7%). The most common incorrect answer is rainbow trout.

Congratulations to two winners of this contest, Alejandro Ruano and Rob Birnie, who will receive tickets to 2013's Vancouver International Boat Show.

Embracing BC's new statutory Family Day Holiday, to be held the second Monday of February, the 2013 Vancouver International Boat Show will run from Thursday, February 7th to Monday, February 11th. Boat aficionados and novices alike will be able to explore the latest and greatest boats and marine products showcased by more than 250 exhibitors at Western Canada's premiere boat show.

Show Director Linda Waddell says the decision to incorporate the inaugural BC Family Day Holiday – by shifting from the traditional Wednesday through Sunday boat show pattern to Thursday through
Monday – was easy. "The Vancouver International Boat Show has always focused on providing an
experience the entire family can enjoy. Parents and children can get up close to a wide range of boats and see which boats best suit their family; they can even enjoy a free boat ride at Granville Island. To be able to hold the 2013 Show on BC's first Family Day is incredibly exciting for our industry."

The 2013 Show will be held at two great locations – indoors at BC Place and in-water at the Granville Island Maritime Market and Marina.
