Vancouver, BC - The Pacific Salmon Foundation is pleased to announce the winner of the 2010/2011 Pacific Salmon Conservation Stamp Art Competition.
This year marks the 21st anniversary of the competition and, as in previous years, the judge’s decision was made difficult by the quality of the entries. After three rounds of adjudication, “Surface Tension” by Mark Hobson was chosen as the winning entry. Mr. Hobson is professionally trained as a biologist and self-taught as an artist. Based in Clayoquot Sound, his award winning paintings are simultaneously accurate and sensitive depictions of the many moods of wilderness and rural landscapes.
Beginning in April, 2010, Hobson’s winning image will adorn stamps affixed to Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada issued saltwater angling licenses. Obtaining a stamp allows the purchaser to retain sport caught Pacific salmon in saltwater in BC.
The Salmon Conservation Stamp is the cornerstone to the Pacific Salmon Foundation’s Community Salmon Program. Since 1989, a portion of funds raised from the purchase of the stamps has directly contributed over $10 million to over 1200 salmon conservation and restoration projects in BC and the Yukon. Community Salmon Program grant recipients have, on average, leveraged these funds seven-fold and have successfully completed projects worth over $70 million.
For salmon to survive and thrive, these genetically diverse fish need access to healthy habitat, food, good water quality and enough water in streams. Achieving healthy, sustainable and naturally diverse Pacific salmon stocks requires time, money and dedicated people.
PSF continues raises funds and directs funding to grassroots, volunteer and community-driven projects focused on the conservation and recovery of Pacific salmon. PSF supports research and science, then integrates this knowledge into program plans at the community and watershed level. PSF works with First Nations, private companies, educational institutions, non-profit groups, all levels of government, and commercial and recreational anglers to bring salmon back to our streams.
