Alouette River Chum Salmon Egg-Take
Posted on October 18th 2012, by Seymour Salmonid Society
Seymour Salmonid Society will be conducting its annual chum salmon egg-take at Alouette River in Maple Ridge in the next several weeks. If you are interested in doing some fun volunteer work, then this is a great opportunity! The egg-take will be happening from 9:00am to Noon or 1:00pm. You can either be picked up near the hatchery in North Vancouver or meet at Alouette River. Waders can be provided if you do not have any.
The process will involve collecting adult chum salmon, checking and killing them before stripping eggs or taking milt. The eggs and milt will be transported back to the hatchery where fertilization will be done. The hatchery does not require volunteer to do this part but if you are also welcome to come along for this, which should be done by 3:00pm.
There are currently three dates available for you to choose from. They are October 23rd, 31st and November 5th. If you are interested, please email Ed Walls at volunteering@seymoursalmon.com or phone 604-288-0511.
