Snagging

Snagging is hooking a fish in any part of its body other than its mouth. When a fish is accidentally snagged, it must be released immediately. Deliberately snagging a fish is illegal when fishing in British Columbia. When a poacher attempts to snag a fish, he or she would violently jerks the rod back while retrieving the line. The hope is to hook a fish that swims by after repeating this process many times.

If you witness an individual who is attempting to snag fish, please report them to either Fisheries and Oceans Canada or conservation offices.
