Mystery Fish Contest #7 Result
Answer: Chum Salmon
The mystery fish species in our seventh mystery fish species contest is a chum salmon or Oncorhynchus keta.
At first glance, this Pacific salmon lacks spots along its body, which only yields two possibility - Chum salmon and sockeye salmon. Both species do not have spots along its body, or sometimes a few spots are found along the dorsal fin area. The most distinct feature that suggests this is a chum salmon, is the purple stripes or shadings along its body. This is a very fresh chum salmon from the ocean, so those stripes or shadings are not very obvious. If you look closely, you can just starting to see them.
Out of 315 entries, 70.8% (223 entries) were correct. The most common incorrect answer was sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka).
