After spending several weeks in the hatchery pool since hatching, Noons Creek’s juvenile chum salmon are ready to be released and begin their journey to the Pacific Ocean. On Saturday May 1st, you can be part of the start of this journey at the Fingerling Festival! This annual celebration takes place at the Noons Creek Hatchery and Port Moody Recreation Centre.
From 11:00am to 3:00pm, visitors have the opportunity to release juvenile chum salmon into Noons Creek with small buckets provided by the hatchery. Local stewardship groups across the Lower Mainland will also be displaying their projects in the skating arena. Spend some time talking to different groups and discover what you can do to take better care of the environment. The Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC and Fishing with Rod will also be showcasing our current projects so be sure to drop by for a chat!
Noons Creek Hatchery is an ongoing community project by Port Moody Ecological Society. Beside operating the hatchery, volunteers of PMES also restore fish habitat, sample water quality and conduct outreach programs. These collective effort has brought Noons Creek and nearby watershed back to life. In recent years, salmon returns have flourished in these tiny streams.
Date and time: Saturday May 1st, 11:00am - 3:00pm
Location: Noons Creek Hatchery and Port Moody Recreation Centre, 340 Ioco Road, Port Moody
