Fred's Custom Tackle in Chilliwack is once again hosting the Wally Hall Junior Memorial Steelhead Fishing Derby! This annual Chilliwack River winter steelhead fishing derby takes place from December 1st to March 15th. Anglers will have a chance to win fantastic prizes, including $1,000 for the heaviest fish of the season and of course bragging rights. Proceeds from the derby will be used to fund further salmonid restoration projects for the Chilliwack/Vedder River system.

Derby entry is $20 and can be purchased at Fred's Custom Tackle and must be done so one day prior to your fishing trip. This is a hatchery-marked steelhead fishing derby, so once you have retained your hatchery-marked steelhead, bring it to Fred's Custom Tackle and have it weighed.

Prizes of this year's derby include:

  • First fish of the season - $50.
  • First fish over 17lb of the season - $100.
  • Hidden weights - $100.
  • Largest fish of the season - $1,000.
  • Second largest fish of the season - John Milner centerpin reel.
  • Third largest fish of the season - Drift rod and reel setup, valued at $300.

Award ceremony and buffet lunch will take place on March 22nd at the Vedder Legion in Chilliwack at 10:00am. There will also be plenty of fantastic draw prizes given out to participants, including a custom built Sage gear rod by local rod builder Dave Barnes.

Proceeds raised from the derby will be administered by the Fraser Valley Watersheds Coalition, which works closely with Fisheries and Oceans Canada's habitat restoration program. FVWC has completed numerous habitat restoration projects for the Chilliwack/Vedder River system, including the most recent one at Browne Creek in the lower river.

Good luck to all participants!
