With a rod holder, a tub of worms and a simple spinning outfit, you may win a trophy and some great prizes this Sunday! The annual bullhead Fishing Derby, hosted by the Richmond Golden Rods and Reels Society, is scheduled to take place at Garry Point Park from 10:00am to 1:00pm on June 27th.
More commonly known as bullhead, pacific staghorn sculpin are very abundant in the Fraser River estuary. Their abundance and big appetite make them the ideal target species for kids who want to get into fishing.
Beside bullhead, participants may also encounter other exciting species, such as northern pikeminnow, peamouth chub, bull trout and flounder. Although these fish do not qualify for the bullhead trophy, the largest non-bullhead will also be a prize winner.
Garry Point Park is located at the southwestern corner of Steveston and the best bullhead fishing can be done on both the beaches and rocks in the park. The best method is to cast out a large piece of bait such as dew worm, shrimp and fish cubes with a weight that is heavy enough so it can be anchored on the river bottom.
The bullhead derby is opened to kids who are 12 years or younger and seniors. Registration begins at 9:00am and awards will be given at 1:00pm. For more information, please contact Phil Trentadue by phoning 778-294-6097 or by email.
