Rivers Inlet BC Fishing Report

Fishing in the inlet this past week has been consistent.
Overall, chinook salmon fishing has been tough, but persistent anglers have been getting fish in the low to mid teens on a regular basis. Today one of our guides took a group up to the head of the inlet and got skunked, along with 40+ other boats. Fishing at the head has been slow for everyone and very crowded, with 50+ boats pounding the area every single morning. Down inlet, few fish have been caught over 25 lbs. Nevertheless, early mornings or evenings at the wall/dome increases one's chances of hooking into a big one. The classic white hootchie/purple haze flasher fished at 70-100 feet has been working well for these fish. Many feeder Rivers Inlet chinook have been intercepted lately, so please respect the minimum size and release these fish with care, as they will return as trophy sized chinook one day!
Calvert island continues to be excellent for coho salmons and the odd spring, but timing is crucial. Our boats are averaging 20+ hookups on any given morning, but very few in the afternoon. Anglers have been doing well with hootchie/flashers and 4-5' spoons in the usual colours - army truck, kitchen sink, cop car - in 120-160 feet of water. These fish are not picky. One of my guests had a banner day with buck tails last week. It's all about getting it in front of them!
Halibut fishing has slowed down a bit. Paddle rocks and open bight continue to produce decent chickens for those that put their time in, with the odd 50 pounder in the mix. Salmon bellies, herring, and glow in the dark jigs have been doing very well fished between 200-300 feet.
